Mikes' story starts in a Texas church at age 7 — walking a church aisle alone because his mom was wise enough to make him own his faith. It runs through a home with an alcoholic father, a teenager who eventually told his own dad this ends now, and a young man who joined the military not out of patriotism, but because his family needed him to.
